Keywords for PPC - Pay Per Click

Again one of the biggest hurdles facing Affiliate Marketing "noobs" is they just can't seem to get "ideas" for what products to promote or what keywords could be profitable. From talking with many of them behind the scenes on forums such as a4u (PM's: I never post!) I get the impression that the biggest keyword problem is that noobs sit around thinking too much and not actually trying. The easiest way to find the most profitable keywords for PPC is to test them; test keywords!

I have advised noobs many times not to bid on generic keywords in popular sectors such as, finance, travel, broadband, whitegoods, gaming, gambling, games consoles, fashion, clothing, in fact pretty much every thing you can think of. I mentioned before that bidding generic is a privellage left open only to a select few "super affiliates" who have negotiated much better commissions with networks and merchants in their chosen fields. They can negotiate these rates because they have a proven track record. Something that as a noob you don't have! So start as niche as you can get with your keywords. These are the ones that will get you on the road to super affiliate status.

Profitable PPC Keywords

I will tell you about a keyword strategy I have mentioned before; the Untapped SEO strategy. A key part of this strategy is to bid absolute minimum cost per click (CPC) on super niche keywords that still get significant search volumes to make these very profitable keywords. I use an example of a colour laser jet printer below, (the full thread can be read here: profitable niche keywords

What is to stop you from creating a landing page for a HP Q6455A Color Laserjet 2600N printer and bidding only on these keywords:

[HP Q6455A Colour Laserjet 2600N printer]
[HP Q6455A printer]
[HP Q6455A Laserjet]
[HP Q6455A Colour printer]

*Notice I only use [exact match]. Using this strategy NEVER use anything other than [exact match keywords]!

The question is "would it be profitable to spend 30 minutes setting up a landing page and only bidding 2p per click?"

The answer is look at how many people are appearing for those search terms! It's certainly profitable for them and in all probability they are paying maore than 2p per click. You may find that you land on a great keyword and can icrease your click through (and sales) by increasing the cost per click from the minimum of 2p per click or whatever.

Profitable PPC Keywords in Perspective

Just to put this concept of profitable keywords in perspective I'm going to use Nintendo DS Lite as an example.

Keyword Scenario 1:

You could find a merchant with the lowest or near as darn it price for Nintendo DS Lite and start a campaign direct linking to that merchant. It takes 5 minutes to put the phrase "Nintendo DS Lite" into the Google Keyword Tool for Adwords and then copy and paste the results into a campaign you are setting up in your Google adwords account. The whole thing would take about 10 minutes. And guess what? You would lose money hand over fist. You would lose money on one of the most profitable keyword products in games consoles on the internet.

Notice I didn't say "one of the most profitable keywords"! No I said one of the most profitable keyword products. Allow me to present a new perspective on this.

Keyword Scenario 2:

You could bid on [buy nintendo ds lite console] and land on a landing page featuring prices at top UK suppliers (ideally prices that you can keep updated) and your affiliate deeplink to the product at each supplier. Three things have vastly improved since scenario 1 above. Firstly, you have included the word "buy", secondly you are going to present the visitor with "choice" by using a price comparison section and thirdly you have also included the word "console". More targetd traffic, looking to "buy" (not looking at pictures all day, not to buy games, or not to whatever) being presented with your affiliate links for the nintendo ds lite console. And you are using [exact match]

You would also bid minimum bid on [cheap nintendo ds lite console]. Again we include the word "console" and now we include the word "cheap" which implies the customer is looking to "buy".

These [exact match] keywords will only get lesss than 2% of keyword traffic that includes "nintendo ds lite" BUT they are straight forward undeniable examples of profitable niche keywords.

If you went with "scenario 1" and bid on "Nintendo DS Lite" as broad or phrase match you would need to spend 3 hours a day just watching and checking the results and your spend. YOU WOULD LOSE MONEY. With "scenario 2" you spend 5 minutes (maximum) per day, spend way less of your hard earned cash and YOU make a small profit. The secret is to do it over and over again with as many products, as many landing pages, as many Google adwords campaigns as you can!

If you are beginning to see the logic here, and more importantly, the profit potential you now need to think about the "speed" element a bit more closely. You need landing pages fast. PPC landing pages that can be created in 10% of the normal time required and that can be managed quickly and in a very low on "time" fashion.
